How much earwax is normal?

When it comes to earwax, the waxy substance in your ears produced in your ear canals, there are a number of questions you may have as it is something that most people usually don’t give that much time to it. Until it becomes an issue, most people don’t give their earwax a second thought until they want to find out if what they are experiencing is normal. One of these things could be about how much earwax is normal.

Earwax is a natural and essential substance in the ear because it is a natural barrier which stops bacteria and dirt from entering the ear canal, and potentially causing infection. Furthermore, it acts as a lubricant and provides a protective coating for your ear canal by stopping it from becoming itchy and flaky.

It is important to note that the ears are self-cleaning, so even if you feel like you have a lot of earwax, if it is not causing you any pain or problems, you should leave your ears to clean themselves. This means not sticking foreign objects, such as cotton ear buds or bobby pins into your ear canal to remove excess wax.

You may find that you have excess earwax, and common symptoms of these include hearing loss, ringing in the ears (tinnitus) or ear pain. If you find that this is the case, then you may have too much ear wax. In this case, we recommend trying an at home treatment, such as using 3 to 4 drops of olive oil in your ear to clean out the wax.
