What colour should ear wax be?

Ear wax. Everyone has it… Although the colour of one’s ear wax and whether said colour is a cause for concern is seldom spoken about in day to day conversations.

You may notice that the colour of your ear wax may change sometimes; this can be due to many different factors. Understandably, this can leave you with lingering questions and have you feeling confused and possibly a little insecure. However, there is no need to worry, here at Ear Wax Care we are here to help to put those worries at bay.

Essentially, what may be considered ‘normal’ ear wax is subjective, as the colour and consistency varies person to person. The colours usually range between yellow, light brown, and orange. The colour tends to darken depending on how much dirt the wax is picking up. Alternatively, light or white ear wax is simply due to the ear canal being dry and is common in people who have skin conditions such as eczema or psoriasis.

Minor differences in ear wax shouldn’t be a cause for concern, however, if your ear wax is an unusual consistency, or smells, it could be a sign of an infection and you should see an audiologist as soon as you can.

At Ear Wax Care, our priority is to ensure that you make the most out of your hearing.
